The resolution states the Crew Love basketball tournament "began in 2012 as a friendly basketball rivalry among a group of friends and has grown into one of Boston's most celebrated community traditions." What started as competition between local brands and small businesses expanded to include "city love games" pitting neighborhoods against each other, beginning with Roxbury and Dorchester and later adding Mattapan, Hyde Park and other neighborhoods, according to the resolution. The event is described as "entirely community-driven and volunteer-led," with participants competing "not for monetary prizes but for neighborhood pride, sportsmanship, and a shared love of the city of Boston." The resolution notes the tournament is "intentionally inclusive, featuring youth competitions, women's games, and family-friendly programming." A representative of the Crew Love team told the council the group has been organizing the event for "14 hard years," crediting founding members including Drew, Rich, Phil, Keith, Greg and Dave.
