BOSTON --

COMMUNITY -- The Boston City Council used its Sept. 30 meeting to recognize Maura Toomey, a Jamaica Plain resident originally from Dublin who swims for the Massachusetts Open Water Swimming Association (MOSA). Toomey completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming this August when she finished the Catalina Channel crossing, swimming more than 20 miles across the California channel in 15 hours and 45 minutes while contending with cold water, heavy swells and fierce winds. At 70, she became the oldest person to complete that crossing.

The Catalina swim completed a Triple Crown that also includes the English Channel, which Toomey swam in 2015 to raise money for an Irish cystic fibrosis charity, and the 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan. Toomey took up marathon swimming after volunteering for the Provincetown Swim for Life, and completed her first open-water challenge, a swim across San Francisco Bay from Alcatraz to the Presidio, on her 50th birthday.

The councilor who introduced Toomey noted that MOSA sanctions and safeguards marathon swims across Massachusetts and trains the observers and safety crews who follow swimmers during their crossings, support that the council credited with helping local athletes like Toomey undertake the swims.
