BOSTON -- Council recognition of a Boston-based high school coach was the notable sports item to come out of this period's public meetings.
HIGH SCHOOL -- At the Sept. 16 City Council meeting, Councillor Brian Worrell, joined by Councillor Fitzgerald, presented a resolution honoring Marcus Craigwell, head boys lacrosse coach at BC High, for the program's 2026 state championship. Worrell said that since taking office in 2019, Craigwell has led the team to five state championship appearances, "but this year they brought home the title." Worrell cited Craigwell's record of 14 All-Americans, three professional players, four Coach of the Year honors and 169 career high school wins. Councillor Fitzgerald, who represents the Dorchester area where many BC High students live, said Craigwell teaches "a lot of the kids at Dorchester" the values that carry beyond the field. Craigwell told the council, "although I'm the first black coach to win a state championship in Boys Lacrosse, I know I won't be the last, and I hope I just encourage more people of color to play the sport."
