Massport Advisory Director Outlines Air Quality Monitoring Efforts Near Logan Airport

Aaron Toffler, Executive Director of the Massport Community Advisory Committee, a 35-community oversight body, told host Paul Baskin that one ultrafine particulate matter monitor is currently operating in Winthrop, with three more in East Boston, and that data is available in real time at massportcac.org. Toffler said the monitor has been running about five months, too short to draw firm source conclusions, but confirmed that readings spike when wind blows from the airport toward the Winthrop sensor. A Massport residential soundproofing pilot relaunched in 2024 has treated roughly 10 homes in Winthrop and East Boston combined, funded 80 percent by the federal government, with plans for about 20 more. Toffler said Massport's 10-to-15-year strategic plan is expected to open for public comment within weeks, and he characterized prospects for meaningful near-term flight-path changes as largely exhausted.
