City Council 2026-09-17 1400 · Meeting of September 17, 2026

Boston City Council hears sweeping testimony on preventing student homelessness. Councilor Benjamin J. Weber's Committee on Education hearing drew city and nonprofit leaders describing 5,405 Boston Public Schools students identified as homeless in the 2024-25 school year, more than 10 percent of the district.

BPS Chief of Student Support Corey McCarthy said the district's Early Homelessness Intervention Program has partnered with Family Aid to serve more than 3,000 families and help over 1,300 secure permanent housing, but warned pandemic-era grant funding "has sunset." Mayor's Office of Housing Stability Director Danielle Johnson said nonpayment drives more than 70 percent of Boston evictions, concentrated in three Dorchester and Roxbury zip codes. Higher Ground's Dr. Brandi Brooks said Boston accounts for 16 percent of all homeless students statewide.

No votes were taken.
