City Council · Meeting of September 30, 2026

Boston City Council unanimously approves emergency relief for Nubian Square fire victims. Councilors Miniard Culpepper and Henry Santana filed the resolution after a six-alarm fire gutted the historic Edison Building, telling colleagues displaced businesses "will essentially have to start over from scratch." The vote came amid a tense exchange over the council's use of "emergency" late filings, with Councilor Julia M. Mejia calling the practice confusing and Councilor Sharon Durkan saying she's faced threats for blocking past requests.

Separately, the council approved shifting $3,317,987 from its collective-bargaining reserve to fund new Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society contracts, after testimony that detectives are largely paying out of pocket for health screenings. Councilor Edward M. Flynn asked, "Is it appropriate for us to pay for health and wellness?

I think it is." The council also adopted resolutions backing ballot Question 6's $100 million conservation fund and a $10 billion Army Corps coastal storm protection plan.
