Boston City Council Passes $8.1 Million FY27 Budget Amendment Package Before Midnight Deadline

BOSTON — June 10, 2026 — Boston City Council approves $8.1 million FY27 budget amendment package hours before a midnight deadline. Council At Large Benjamin Weber, chair of the Ways and Means Committee, presented the package restoring funding cut from the mayor's proposed budget, including $2 million for housing vouchers, $1.2 million for Age Strong senior programming, $750,000 for youth jobs, $555,000 directly to the Office of Black Male Advancement, $200,000 to the Office of LGBTQIA2S Plus Advancement, and $600,000 each for arts and culture and small businesses. The session also featured a Pride Month presentation organized by Councillor Henry Santana and a proclamation by Councillor Julia Mejia recognizing June 19 as Napoleon Jones Henderson Day, honoring the Chicago-born Mass Art educator credited with bringing Juneteenth celebrations to Boston. A Councillor Kendra Lara Fitzgerald amendment drawing $1.4 million from Boston Transportation Department personnel services — adding funds for a Citywide Coordinated Response Team, EMS health and wellness, the Human Rights Commission, and legacy business awards — was still before the body when debate concluded, with several councillors citing CFO warnings of possible BTD layoffs.
