Boston launches heat resilience roadmap targeting five environmental justice communities. Mayor Michelle Wu joined City Council President Ed Flynn, Chief of Environment and Energy Mariama White-Hammond, and Rose Kennedy Greenway Executive Director Chris Cook at an Earth Day event in Chinatown to release "Heat Resilience Solutions for Boston," a plan prioritizing Chinatown, Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan, and Roxbury. The mayor's proposed budget ties directly to the plan with $2.5 million for a climate-ready streets program, $20 million for energy retrofits in triple-deckers and multifamily homes, and $137 million for parks, tree canopy, and open spaces.

The city will also distribute 30 pop-up cooling kits to community organizations this summer and launch a Cool Bus Stop design challenge this fall, with the winning design informing new shelters on the Silver Line 4 and Silver Line 5 routes. White-Hammond, whose office produced the report with state MVP program funding and support from the Barr Foundation, said the plan directly addresses a documented overlap between historically redlined neighborhoods and present-day heat islands: "Those same communities should now get a disproportionate investment in reversing those negative trends."
