Boston Mayor Walsh urges residents to stay home as COVID-19 cases hit 1,245 citywide. At a Tuesday press briefing, Mayor Martin J. Walsh reported that Massachusetts had recorded more than 32,000 confirmed cases and 1,245 deaths, with Boston's own case count rising by 137 in a single day.
Walsh announced seven city trucks equipped with speakers will drive through Hyde Park, Mattapan, Dorchester, East Boston, and Roxbury this weekend broadcasting public health messages in seven languages, including Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Arabic, Somali, and Cabo Verde Creole. The city's Boston Hope Medical Center at the convention center, open one week with 1,000 beds, is treating 133 patients; Chief Health and Human Services Officer Mario Martinez said hospitals are "managing the surge" but are being monitored daily. Walsh said the city's 65 youth food sites have served more than 400,000 meals since the crisis began, and warned would-be marathon runners bluntly: "You're not a champion" for running the route on Patriots Day, directing them instead to the rescheduled September 14 race date.
