Snowden defeats Austin Prep 60-51 to reach TD Garden state semifinals

BOSTON — Snowden Cougars advance to Massachusetts Division IV state semifinals with 60-51 win over Austin Prep. Junior forward Lansana Kaba posted 22 points and 10 rebounds and was named game MVP as Snowden, seeded second, defeated the top-seeded Austin Prep Cougars in the North Division IV sectional final at Tewksbury High School. Snowden led by as many as 22 points on the strength of a relentless 2-2-1 full-court press before Austin Prep cut the deficit to three in the fourth quarter behind guard Mike Gizzi's three consecutive third-quarter steals and a 22-9 run.

Snowden held on, with center Javier Ellis contributing five blocks and sixth man Richard Capellan tallying eight assists off the bench. Austin Prep's Lance Altenor finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort. Head coach Paul Rogers, who has led Snowden for over a decade, told sideline reporter Michelle Fenelon after the win: "I'd say Snowden's on the map right now — we're about to play in the Garden."
