Plan Mattapan Workshop Focuses Residents on Corridor Design and Housing Goals

BOSTON — Mayor Walsh makes the case for density at Plan Mattapan's 11th community workshop. Walsh addressed residents at the Tuesday evening session — part of a planning process that has logged more than 105 community engagements since launching in October 2018 — urging Mattapan to "keep an open mind" on housing density and calling increased supply "the only way" to stabilize rents citywide, where roughly 32,000 of a 69,000-unit housing goal have been built. He fielded questions on rent control ("it doesn't solve the problem"), public safety (acknowledging a recent uptick in violence and a summer strategy session held the prior week), and vacant properties, directing residents to Natalia from the Office of Economic Development and to the Main Streets program for business support.

City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo and state Representative Russell Holmes were in attendance. Planners from Mass Design Group then led a hands-on activity in which residents used LEGO pieces representing triple-deckers, mixed-use buildings, affordable units, and commercial improvements to design their preferred futures for the Blue Hill, Morgan, River, and Cummins corridors — with the results to be presented at a future Corridors Report Back session.
