Mayor Walsh Signs Local Wetlands Ordinance at Roslindale Urban Wild

Boston Mayor Walsh signs local wetlands ordinance, setting stricter protections than state law. Mayor Martin J. Walsh signed the ordinance at an outdoor ceremony at the Roslindale Wetlands, one of roughly 30 urban wilds across the city, capping an effort that began after January 2018 flooding prompted City Council hearings.

The measure directs the Conservation Commission to weigh future climate impacts, including sea level rise, in reviewing development and construction applications near wetland resource areas. City Councilor at Large Michelle Wu, a lead sponsor along with Councilor Matt O'Malley, said the ordinance centers climate justice, noting that "the impacts of climate change are already disproportionately impacting those who had the least to do with bringing about the harms." Conservation Commission Chair Michael Parker said the body's next step is drafting implementing regulations, calling the ordinance "an important tool to protect the city's wetlands going forward." The ordinance is designed to work alongside the BPDA's flood overlay district and the Resilient Boston Harbor Vision.
