BOSTON -- Revolutionary Spaces marks Boston Massacre's 250th anniversary with ceremony at Old South Meeting House. Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Governor Charlie Baker, and Boston Police Commissioner William G.

Gross headlined a July 22 program at the historic hall where 18th-century Bostonians first gathered to memorialize the five men killed by British soldiers on March 5, 1770. The event served as the public debut of Revolutionary Spaces, the organization formed by the merger of the Bostonian Society and the Old South Association, with Berkshire Bank as leading sponsor. Walsh told the audience the massacre crowd was "diverse" in ways rarely taught, "African and Native Americans, working people, poor people, immigrants", while Commissioner Gross, Boston's first African American police commissioner, drew a direct line from the 1770 shootings to the obligation of modern law enforcement to protect First Amendment rights without violence.

NAACP Boston branch President Tanisha Sullivan closed with a quote from Ella Baker: "We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes."
