Janey Orders 45-Day Review of BPD Internal Affairs After Rose File Release

BOSTON — July 22, 2026 — Boston Mayor Kim Janey orders a 45-day review of Boston Police Department internal affairs procedures following release of redacted files on former officer Patrick Rose. Speaking at an Earth Day press briefing alongside Chief of Health and Human Services Marty Martinez and incoming Office of Police Accountability and Transparency Executive Director Stephanie Everett, Janey called it "indefensible" that Rose — whose alleged sexual abuse of a child was internally sustained — was not terminated and later rose to become president of a police union over roughly 20 more years. Everett, set to begin May 3, was tasked with delivering a reform plan within 45 days of her start. Separately, Janey announced winners of a $1.5 million vaccine equity grant initiative, with awardees including Tufts Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, and the Black Boston COVID-19 Coalition, and reported 83 new COVID-19 cases in Boston as of April 20, with no new deaths, keeping the city's death toll at 1,363.
