Coast Guard breaks ground on $415 million Base Boston fast response cutter homeport

BOSTON — July 19, 2026 — Coast Guard breaks ground on $415 million Base Boston recapitalization, adding six fast response cutters to the North End waterfront. Rear Admiral Tom Allen, Commander of the 1st Coast Guard District, joined Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and Congressman Stephen Lynch on July 19 for the ceremonial start of construction on a new central pier and floating docks at the historic installation. The $35 million infrastructure project, built by Walsh Construction, will prepare the base to home-port six new cutters at a combined acquisition cost of $380 million. Mayor Wu cited an estimated $45 million annual local economic impact from the 222 new Coast Guard personnel the project is expected to bring to the city. Congressman Lynch announced the recent House passage of the Don Young Coast Guard Reauthorization Act and confirmed that a planned closure of Coast Guard Station Scituate had been reversed. Rear Admiral Allen said the new vessels will increase the district's operational capacity by 22 percent, with the first cutter expected to arrive as early as summer 2026.
