BOSTON — BPS superintendent finalist Tommy Welch fielded 90 minutes of questions from students, parents, and community members at a July 20 public panel organized by the district's superintendent search committee. Welch, currently the Region 1 school superintendent overseeing 15 schools and roughly 7,200 students across East Boston, Charlestown, and the North End, was the second of two finalists — the other being Mary Skipper, superintendent of Summerville Public Schools — after two candidates of color withdrew earlier in the search. Panelist Tanya Nixon-Silberg, a parent at the Mendell Elementary School, pressed Welch directly on the withdrawals, calling them "alarming," and asked how he would actively elevate Black women's leadership in the district.

On the question of state receivership, which had appeared in news that same day, Welch was unequivocal: "My views on receivership is not going to happen — we're not going to let it happen." Welch also proposed a public-facing data dashboard covering special education compliance, English learner services, and transportation on-time rates, and cited a recently signed bus driver contract as a starting point for tackling what he called one of the district's largest budget line items.
