Boston Veterans Post Dedicates Two New Murals in Mattapan Square

BOSTON — July 22, 2026 — Boston's oldest African American Legion post dedicates two new murals at Mattapan Square. The William E. Carter American Legion Post, chartered June 9, 1919, unveiled murals on its south and north exterior walls during a July 22 ceremony organized by Commander Meredith Tewitt and attended by Mayor Kim Janey. The works were created by artist Jeremy Sobeck, selected from a field of seven applicants through the Boston Planning and Development Agency's Plan Mattapan process; Sobeck was named an honorary junior member of the post at the ceremony. Janey praised the project as a partnership between the city and a neighborhood civic organization, saying "Mattapan matters," and used the occasion to promote the free Route 28 bus pilot and COVID-19 vaccination access.
