Boston Swears In 13 City Councilors at Most Diverse Inaugural in City History

Boston City Council's most diverse class in history took the oath of office at Faneuil Hall in January 2020. Mayor Martin J. Walsh administered the oath to all 13 councilors — nine returning and four newly elected — following the November 5, 2019 municipal election.

City Clerk Maureen E. Feeney read into the record a certification letter from Boston Election Commission Chair Anita D. Tavares confirming the results, including at-large victories for Michelle Wu, Annissa Essaibi George, Michael Flaherty, and Julia Mejia, and district wins for Lydia Marie Edwards, Edward M.

Flynn, Frank Baker, Andrea Joy Campbell, Ricardo Arroyo, Matt O'Malley, Kim Janey, Priscilla Kenzie-Bach, and Liz Braden. Walsh called the council "the most diverse in history" and noted the election of the first Afro-Latina immigrant woman to the body. A non-binding ballot question on renaming Dudley Square to Nubian Square failed, 28,800 to 24,250.
