Boston Public Facilities Commission Approves $871,879 Design Contract Fix for Chinatown School

BOSTON — July 22, 2026 — Boston Public Facilities Commission unanimously approved an $871,879 amendment to the design contract for the new Josiah Quincy Upper School in Chinatown. Chair Catherine Craven and Commissioners Larry Momoli and Dionne Irish voted to add the amount to the Design and Construction Administration Services contract with HMFH Architects at the April 14, 2021 meeting, correcting a contractual mismatch between the city's agreement with the firm and a parallel contract HMFH holds with the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Senior Project Manager Rowan McNulty told the commission that $471,879 covers hazardous materials and borings work from MSBA amendments signed between 2019 and 2020 that were never formally incorporated into the city's own contract, and that approximately $400,000 covers materials testing costs being reclassified from miscellaneous to reimbursable architectural services. MSBA reimbursement for the full project is expected to reach upwards of $52 million, and the new building is targeted for Boston Public Schools students in fall 2024.
