Boston PIC Approves South End Fatality-Site Repairs, Advances Ruggles Station Overhaul

BOSTON — March 12, 2026 — Boston PIC approves South End fatality-site crosswalk repairs and clears two Wentworth street projects at its March 12 hearing. The commission unanimously approved specific repairs at Albany Street and Wareham Street in the South End, where engineer Radunan of Kittelson Associates told the commission the work was "in response to safety concerns and a fatality at this location because Albany Street does not control through traffic," prompting the addition of a pedestrian refuge island and a new ramp pair to support a formal marked crossing. The commission also unanimously approved a 592-square-foot pedestrian easement and companion specific repairs on Ruggles Street at 550 Huntington Avenue for Wentworth Institute of Technology. Two larger items — a 32-unit residential project at 120 Braintree Street in Brighton filed by 120 Braintree LLC and a sweeping joint MBTA, Northeastern University, and Boston Housing Authority petition to replace the non-accessible monumental staircase at the Columbus Avenue entrance to Ruggles Station with a new covered accessible ramp — were continued to the March 26 hearing, with PIC staff agreeing to convene a coordination meeting between the MBTA team, the Transportation Department, and the Commission for Persons with Disabilities before that date.
