Boston PIC Approves National Grid, Huntington Theatre Petitions, Expands to Six Members

Boston's Public Improvement Commission closed its 2020 calendar with two unanimous petition approvals and a structural expansion at its December 23 remote session. The commission approved a National Grid petition to replace a circa-1970 gas regulator station on Seaburns Avenue in West Roxbury — a prefabricated concrete pit roughly 21 feet by 6 feet serving upward of 10,000 customers — after National Grid confirmed Boston Transportation Department sign-off and a four-foot pedestrian clearance on the six-foot sidewalk. The commission also approved a temporary earth retention license for the Huntington Theatre Company's renovation at 256-264 Huntington Avenue in Roxbury, covering approximately 97 feet of drilled micro-pile excavation; geotechnical consultant Mary noted expected vibration levels from the drilled piles would be lower than background vibrations from adjacent MBTA Green Line traffic.

In an informational announcement, the chair confirmed the mayor and City Council had approved expanding the commission from five to six members by adding the Mayor's Commission for Persons with Disabilities as a formal voting seat — raising quorum to four — a change Commissioner Makash called the result of "years" of advocacy.
