Boston Officials Vow to Protect Abortion Access After Supreme Court Overturns Roe

BOSTON — July 21, 2026 — Boston officials and reproductive rights advocates rally at State House after Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Hours after the Court issued its Dobbs decision on June 24, 2022, Mayor Michelle Wu, Attorney General Maura Healey, and a coalition led by Reproductive Equity Now, the ACLU of Massachusetts, and Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts convened outside the State House to affirm that abortion remains legal in Massachusetts under the 2020 Roe Act. Governor Charlie Baker issued a same-day executive order prohibiting Massachusetts agencies from cooperating with out-of-state investigations of providers or patients and barring cooperation with extradition requests tied to legal abortion services. The state's FY2023 budget, currently in conference, includes $2 million for clinic security and infrastructure as well as broad provider-protection language that advocates say goes further than the executive order. Healey, promising that "all this does is energize me," called on the Commonwealth to function as a "helper state" directing resources to abortion funds in restriction states, while the Beyond Roe Coalition announced a 21-point legislative agenda it plans to drive through the legislature in the months ahead.
