Boston Officials Vow Charges in Hate Group Assault, Cite Active Investigation

BOSTON — July 22, 2026 — Boston officials convene multi-agency briefing after hate group assaults city resident. The mayor and law enforcement partners from the Boston Police Department, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, and the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office gathered July 22 to address three recent hate group incidents, the most serious of which involved an alleged assault on a person identified as Mr. Morell, described as a member of both the Black community and the LGBTQ community. A representative of the Joint Terrorism Task Force outlined the significant legal constraints on federal monitoring of domestic extremist groups, stating, "We cannot track or monitor domestic groups or police ideology" absent evidence of a potential federal crime involving force or violence. Officials said the investigation is complicated by suspects' deliberate use of masks but that substantial video footage is under review by the Boston Police Civil Rights Unit, with charges possible against out-of-state suspects if identifications are made.
