Boston and neighboring cities mark 10 years of public bike share with a Blue Bike unveiling and calls to expand the network. Mayor Kim Janey hosted the July 22 anniversary celebration alongside Cambridge City Manager Louie DiPasquale, Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone, and Brookline Transportation Board Chair Chris Dempsey, with title sponsor Kathy Klingler of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts also speaking. The system has grown from 600 bikes at its 2012 Hubway launch to more than 4,000 bikes across 250 stations in over 11 municipalities, with more than 12 million rides and 25 million miles logged to date.

Curtatone, nearing the end of his tenure, urged successors to "keep it public," arguing that privatized bike share "has not served the public interest in other metro areas." DiPasquale announced Cambridge is adding two stations this week, bringing the city to 71 locations, and noted eight of the system's top 10 most popular stations are in Cambridge.
