Boston launches community process for East Boston's first standalone senior center

Boston kicks off planning for a new East Boston Senior Center at the former Orient Heights Library. Mayor Martin Walsh opened Tuesday's community engagement session at the Paris Street Gym, tracing the project to constituent pressure he first faced in 2014 and acknowledging that renovation costs have grown well beyond the building's $167,000 acquisition price, though he did not provide a current total at the event. Massport Director of Community Relations and Government Affairs Elena Coppola announced that Massport will commit "almost $200,000 a year for programming costs at the senior center," a commitment rooted in a Community Benefits Agreement forged through the Logan Impact Advisory Group's East Boston mitigation negotiations.

City Councilor Lydia Edwards, State Representative Adrian Madaro, and State Senator Joe Boncori all spoke, with Madaro noting that East Boston seniors currently travel to Winthrop for senior programming unavailable in their own neighborhood. Community advocate Mary Barringer called the former library a future civic landmark, and resident Josefina Osorio called on organizers to ensure the center's programming is accessible to non-English speakers.
