Boston honors Bruins captain Zdeno Chara for 1,500 NHL games and years of community service. Mayor Martin Walsh, Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney, New Balance President and CEO Joe Preston, and Warrior CEO Cindy Abbott gathered Tuesday at Warrior Ice Arena to recognize Chara at a ceremony emceed by WBZ-TV Sports Director Steve Burton. The New Balance Foundation announced a $10,000 donation to the Italian Home for Children in Chara's name, part of more than $100 million the foundation has given since 1981.

Preston noted that Chara has personally delivered more than 6,000 pairs of New Balance socks to Boston-area shelters and thousands of sneakers to children in Slovakia. Sweeney described Chara as a future Hall of Famer, saying, "To have an honest superstar, combined with both humility and empathy — that's going to make him a special, special person." Chara is scheduled to be honored on the ice at a Bruins game the following day.
