Boston EMS Graduates 24 New EMTs in First 50-Percent-Female Recruit Class

Boston EMS graduates its first recruit class that is 50 percent women, alongside the retirement of a 43-year veteran. Mayor Martin J. Walsh administered the oath of office to Recruit Class 2019-2 at Faneuil Hall's Great Hall on January 14, 2020, in a ceremony that also marked the final working day of Superintendent-in-Chief Kevin F.

Shea, who joined the department in 1976 and rose to its second-highest rank. Chief of Department Jim Hooley announced the class had treated 365 patients during field training — a department record, he said, with "nobody's come close." Seven of the 24 graduates entered through the City Academy, a Walsh administration pipeline in partnership with the Office of Workforce Development, and the class includes the first Somali-born Boston EMT in department history. BPPA EMS Division Union President Michael McNeil welcomed the new members, telling them: "This union's number one mission is to worry about our members, while they are out worrying about everyone else."
