Boston Commission Approves $1.21 Million Carter School Feasibility Study Contract

Boston's Public Facilities Commission unanimously approved a $1.21 million design contract to study replacing the William E. Carter School, a 1971 temporary building serving 30 students with severe disabilities at 396 Northampton Street in the South End. Senior Project Manager Jim McGaffigan told commissioners the 13,500-square-foot structure lacks a therapeutic pool, art room, music therapy room, physical education space, and adequate wheelchair access in its narrow hallways, and described classrooms retrofitted so tables are cleared between art class and physical therapy in the same room.

Perkins and Will Architects, Incorporated was selected from a field of six firms by a 16-member panel that included representatives of the Massachusetts School Building Authority, which is co-funding the study and has asked the city to evaluate expanding enrollment from 30 to as many as 60 students. The commission also approved a separate amendment to the Utile Incorporated design contract for the Dudley Branch Library renovation covering unforeseen water infiltration in the building's penthouse, and amended its certificate of authority to add Chief of Operations Patrick Brophy as an authorized signatory as Director Patricia Lyons departs the department.
