Boston Chinatown Celebrates Lunar New Year With Nine-Troop Lion Dance Parade

BOSTON — July 22, 2026 — Boston's Chinatown rang in the Year of the Tiger in January 2022 with a Lion Dance Parade organized by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England. Mayor Michelle Wu, introduced as Boston's first Chinese American mayor, attended alongside City Council President Ed Flynn, State Representatives Aaron Michlewitz and Donald Wong, and Councilor at Large Erin Murphy, with Wu using the occasion to introduce Chu-Leng Huang as the city's new Chinatown liaison and Brianna Malor as the new Chief of Community Engagement in her cabinet. Nine lion dance troops paraded from Phillips Square through Chinatown storefronts into the late afternoon, while Tufts University, Tufts Medical Center, South Cove Community Health Center, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston were among the event sponsors. Flynn addressed anti-Asian racism directly from the podium: "We have more work to do in making sure the voices of immigrants are heard across our country." Multiple speakers, including South Cove Community Health Center representatives, called on the mayor and state delegation for increased financial support for Chinatown businesses still recovering from COVID-19.
