Boston Board of Appeal Approves Cannabis Dispensary, Parking Expansion, Dozens of Housing Cases

Boston's Board of Appeal acted on more than two dozen development cases during a marathon December 3, 2019 session, approving a cannabis dispensary in Roslindale, expanding a Cambridge Street parking lot, and moving forward on multiple East Boston residential projects. The board unanimously approved Silver Therapeutics to open an adult-use and medical cannabis dispensary at 717-721 American Legion Highway, converting the 20,000-square-foot City Farm nursery site with hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 22 on-site and adjacent parking spaces, and a community training greenhouse.

A 193-to-431-space parking expansion at 60-66 Cambridge Street cleared on a 3-2 vote, conditioned on three-year cap and BPDA screening review after Boston Public Schools ended its school-bus lease. In East Boston, the board approved four separate residential projects represented by attorney Richard Lenz, including contested demolitions at 38 Lexington Street and 37 Horace Street, drawing preservation objections from resident Dan Bailey of 73 Utah Street, who argued a structure he said dates to the 1840s should not be razed. A Domino's Pizza conditional use at 506-512 Park Drive was approved with lobby hours capped at midnight weekdays and 1 a.m. weekends following pushback from the Audubon Circle Neighborhood Association over the franchisee's initial request to operate until 3 a.m.

A nine-unit building at 48 Alston Street in Allston was denied without prejudice after plan discrepancies and community opposition, and a two-family basement conversion at 822 Canterbury Street in Roslindale was denied without prejudice over zoning and habitability concerns.
